[226] "And thus, bhikkhus, should it be done. First the bhikkhu Channa should be accused; having accused him, he should be made to remember; having made him remember, he should be charged with the offense (āpatti). Having charged him with the offense, the Saṅgha should be informed by a competent and capable bhikkhu:
"'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. This bhikkhu Channa, having committed an offense, does not wish to make amends for the offense. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, let the Saṅgha carry out an act of suspension (ukkhepanīyakamma) against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense, [entailing] non-communion with the Saṅgha. This is the motion (ñatti).
"'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. This bhikkhu Channa, having committed an offense, does not wish to make amends for the offense. The Saṅgha carries out an act of suspension against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense, entailing non-communion with the Saṅgha. Whichever venerable one approves of the carrying out of the act of suspension against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense, entailing non-communion with the Saṅgha, let him be silent; whoever does not approve, let him speak.
"'For the second time also I state this matter. …
"'For the third time also I state this matter. Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. This bhikkhu Channa, having committed an offense, does not wish to make amends for the offense. The Saṅgha carries out an act of suspension against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense, entailing non-communion with the Saṅgha. Whichever venerable one approves of the carrying out of the act of suspension against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense, entailing non-communion with the Saṅgha, let him be silent; whoever does not approve, let him speak.
"'The act of suspension against the bhikkhu Channa for not making amends for an offense, entailing non-communion with the Saṅgha, has been carried out by the Saṅgha. It is approved by the Saṅgha; therefore it is silent. Thus do I hold it.'
"And, bhikkhus, announce it from residence to residence in succession: 'The bhikkhu Channa has had an act of suspension carried out against him by the Saṅgha for not making amends for an offense — non-communion with the Saṅgha.'"
