[367] Now at that time the bhikkhus departed from Sāvatthī to this place and that. The bhikkhus observing mānatta (penance) were able to fulfill¹ the mānatta. Those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow the mānatta to be taken up.
"And thus, bhikkhus, should it be taken up: that bhikkhu observing mānatta should approach one bhikkhu, arrange his upper robe over one shoulder, sit down in the squatting position, raise his joined palms, and say thus: 'I take up the mānatta.' The mānatta is taken up. Or: 'I take up the observance (vatta).' The mānatta is taken up."
The duties of one observing mānatta are concluded.
