[455] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu commits two saṅghādisesa offences (āpatti) concealed for two months: one offence concealed without doubt, and one offence concealed with doubt. He requests from the Saṅgha a two-month probation (parivāsa) for those offences concealed for two months. The Saṅgha grants him a two-month probation for those offences concealed for two months. While he is undergoing probation, another bhikkhu arrives — one who is learned, a master of the transmitted texts, an expert in the Dhamma, an expert in the Vinaya, an expert in the mātikās, wise, competent, intelligent, conscientious, scrupulous, and desirous of the training. He says thus: "Friends, what offence has this bhikkhu committed? For what is this bhikkhu undergoing probation?" They say thus: "Friend, this bhikkhu committed two saṅghādisesa offences concealed for two months: one offence concealed without doubt, and one offence concealed with doubt. He requested from the Saṅgha a two-month probation for those offences concealed for two months; the Saṅgha granted him a two-month probation for those offences concealed for two months. Those, friend, are the offences this bhikkhu committed; it is for those that this bhikkhu is undergoing probation." He says thus: "Friend, as for the offence that was concealed without doubt, the granting of probation for that offence is legitimate; being legitimate, it takes effect. But as for the offence that was concealed with doubt, the granting of probation for that offence is illegitimate; being illegitimate, it does not take effect. For this offence, friend, the bhikkhu is one deserving of mānatta."
