[465] Bhikkhus, here again, a bhikkhu commits two saṅghādisesa offences (saṅghādisesa āpatti) concealed for two months: one month concealed without doubt, one month concealed with doubt. He requests from the Saṅgha probation (parivāsa) for two months on account of the two offences concealed for two months. The Saṅgha grants him probation for two months on account of the two offences concealed for two months. While he is undergoing probation, another bhikkhu arrives — one of great learning, to whom the tradition has been handed down (āgatāgama), a bearer of the Dhamma, a bearer of the Vinaya, a bearer of the Mātikā, wise, competent, intelligent, conscientious, scrupulous, desirous of the training. He says thus: "What, friends, has this bhikkhu committed? On account of what is this bhikkhu undergoing probation?" They say thus: "This bhikkhu, friend, committed two saṅghādisesa offences concealed for two months: one month concealed without doubt, one month concealed with doubt. He requested from the Saṅgha probation for two months on account of the two offences concealed for two months; the Saṅgha granted him probation for two months on account of the two offences concealed for two months. Those offences, friend, this bhikkhu committed; on account of those this bhikkhu is undergoing probation." He says thus: "Friends, as for the month that was concealed without doubt, the granting of probation for that month is in accordance with the Dhamma; being in accordance with the Dhamma, it takes effect. But as for the month that was concealed with doubt, the granting of probation for that month is not in accordance with the Dhamma; not being in accordance with the Dhamma, it does not take effect. For that month, friends, the bhikkhu is entitled to penance (mānatta)."
