[464] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu commits two saṅghādisesa offenses (saṅghādisesa āpatti) concealed for two months: one month concealed while remembering, one month concealed while not remembering. He requests from the Saṅgha a two-month probation (parivāsa) for the two offenses concealed for two months. The Saṅgha grants him a two-month probation for the two offenses concealed for two months. While he is undergoing probation, another bhikkhu arrives — one who is learned, versed in the scriptural tradition, an expert in the Dhamma, an expert in the Vinaya, an expert in the summaries (mātikā), wise, competent, intelligent, conscientious, scrupulous, desirous of the training. He says thus: "Friends, what offense has this bhikkhu committed? For what is this bhikkhu undergoing probation?" They say thus: "Friend, this bhikkhu committed two saṅghādisesa offenses concealed for two months: one month concealed while remembering, one month concealed while not remembering. He requested from the Saṅgha a two-month probation for the two offenses concealed for two months. The Saṅgha granted him a two-month probation for the two offenses concealed for two months. Friend, this bhikkhu committed those offenses; for those offenses this bhikkhu is undergoing probation." He says thus: "Friends, as for the month concealed while remembering, the granting of probation for that month is legitimate; being legitimate, it takes effect. But as for the month concealed while not remembering, the granting of probation for that month is illegitimate; being illegitimate, it does not take effect. For that month, friends, the bhikkhu is entitled to penance (mānatta)."
