[463] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu commits two offences (āpatti) of saṅghādisesa, concealed for two months: one month knowingly concealed, one month unknowingly concealed. He requests from the Saṅgha a two-month probation (parivāsa) for the two offences concealed for two months. The Saṅgha grants him a two-month probation for the two offences concealed for two months. While he is undergoing probation, another bhikkhu arrives — one of great learning, versed in the traditions, an expert in the Dhamma, an expert in the Vinaya, an expert in the summaries (mātikā), wise, competent, intelligent, conscientious, scrupulous, desirous of the training. He says thus: "What offence, friends, has this bhikkhu committed? For what is this bhikkhu undergoing probation?" They say thus: "This bhikkhu, friend, committed two offences of saṅghādisesa, concealed for two months: one month knowingly concealed, one month unknowingly concealed. He requested from the Saṅgha a two-month probation for the two offences concealed for two months. The Saṅgha granted him a two-month probation for the two offences concealed for two months. Those are the offences, friend, that this bhikkhu committed; it is for those that this bhikkhu is undergoing probation." He says thus: "Friends, as for the month that was knowingly concealed, the granting of probation for that month is legitimate; being legitimate, it takes effect. But as for the month that was unknowingly concealed, the granting of probation for that month is illegitimate; being illegitimate, it does not take effect. For that month, friends, the bhikkhu is entitled to penance (mānatta)."
