[481] Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu deserving to be sent back to the beginning (mūlāya paṭikassanā) becomes a novice (sāmaṇera) … becomes insane … becomes deranged in mind (citta) … becomes afflicted by feeling (vedanā) … is suspended for not seeing an offense … is suspended for not making amends for an offense … is suspended for not relinquishing an evil view. Bhikkhus, for one who has been suspended, the sending back to the beginning does not take effect. If he is later reinstated, that same former giving of probation (parivāsa) stands for him. The probation that was given is well given; what has been observed is well observed. That bhikkhu should be sent back to the beginning.
