[592] Then the Blessed One, having given a talk on the Dhamma with reference to that origin and with reference to that occasion, addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, let the Saṅgha appoint Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings (senāsanapaññāpaka) and distributor of meals (bhattuddesaka).
And thus, bhikkhus, should he be appointed. First, Dabba should be asked; having asked him, an experienced and competent bhikkhu should inform the Saṅgha:
'Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, let the Saṅgha appoint the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings and distributor of meals. This is the motion (ñatti).
Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. The Saṅgha appoints the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings and distributor of meals. He to whom the appointment of the Venerable Dabba Mallaputta as assigner of lodgings and distributor of meals is agreeable, let him be silent; he to whom it is not agreeable should speak.
The Venerable Dabba Mallaputta has been appointed by the Saṅgha as assigner of lodgings and distributor of meals. It is agreeable to the Saṅgha; therefore it is silent. Thus do I hold it.'"
