[605] What are the three grantings of the verdict of past insanity (amūḷhavinaya) that are in accordance with the Dhamma? Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu is insane, his mind (citta) deranged. While insane, with mind deranged, he has habitually transgressed much that is unworthy of an ascetic, both in what he has spoken and in what he has attempted by deed. The Saṅgha, or several bhikkhus, or a single person charges him: "Let the venerable one remember having committed an offense (āpatti) of such a kind." Not remembering, he says thus: "Friends, I do not remember having committed an offense of such a kind." The Saṅgha grants him the verdict of past insanity. This granting of the verdict of past insanity is in accordance with the Dhamma.
