[625] Now at that time, while the bhikkhus dwelt having become quarrelsome, having fallen into contention, and having taken to dispute, much that was unbefitting an ascetic had been committed—both uttered in speech and transgressed in deed. Then it occurred to those bhikkhus: "While we have dwelt quarrelsome, fallen into contention, and taken to dispute, much that is unbefitting an ascetic has been committed by us—both uttered in speech and transgressed in deed. If we should charge one another with these offences (āpatti), it may be that this legal issue (adhikaraṇa) would conduce to harshness, to ferocity, to schism. How, then, should we proceed?" They informed the Blessed One of this matter.
