[626] Bhikkhus, here, while bhikkhus who have taken to quarreling, taken to strife, and fallen into dispute are dwelling thus, much that is unworthy of an ascetic has been committed, in word and in deed. If, bhikkhus, it occurs to the bhikkhus there: "While we have taken to quarreling, taken to strife, and fallen into dispute, much that is unworthy of an ascetic has been committed by us, in word and in deed. If we should charge one another with these offenses (āpatti), that legal issue (adhikaraṇa) might well conduce to harshness, to savagery, to schism" — Bhikkhus, I allow a legal issue of such a kind to be settled by covering over with grass (tiṇavatthāraka).
