[692] Then a learned, capable bhikkhu among the bhikkhus belonging to the other side should inform his own side: "Let the venerable ones listen to me. While we have been living having taken to quarreling, having taken to contention, and having fallen into dispute, much has been transgressed that is unworthy of an ascetic, both in what was spoken and in what was done. If we should charge one another with these offenses (āpatti), it may be that this legal issue (adhikaraṇa) would conduce to harshness, to bitterness, to schism. If it is the right time for the venerable ones, I would confess in the midst of the Saṅgha, by the covering over as with grass (tiṇavatthāraka), both the offenses of the venerable ones and my own offense, for the good of the venerable ones and for my own good — excepting a grave fault (thullavajja), excepting what is connected with householders (gihipaṭisaṃyutta)."
