[630] Then, on behalf of the other bhikkhus belonging to the one side, the Saṅgha should be informed by a competent and capable bhikkhu:
"Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. While we have been living engaged in quarrels, engaged in strife, and fallen into dispute, much has been perpetrated that is unbefitting an ascetic, in what was said and done. If we should deal with one another for these offenses (āpatti), it may be that this legal issue (adhikaraṇa) would lead to harshness, to savagery, to schism. If it seems fitting to the Saṅgha, I would confess in the midst of the Saṅgha, by the covering over with grass (tiṇavatthāraka), both the offense of these venerable ones and my own offense, for the sake of these venerable ones and for my own sake — excepting a grave fault (thullavajja), excepting what is connected with householders. This is the motion (ñatti).
"Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. While we have been living engaged in quarrels, engaged in strife, and fallen into dispute, much has been perpetrated that is unbefitting an ascetic, in what was said and done. If we should deal with one another for these offenses, it may be that this legal issue would lead to harshness, to savagery, to schism. I confess in the midst of the Saṅgha, by the covering over with grass, both the offense of these venerable ones and my own offense, for the sake of these venerable ones and for my own sake — excepting a grave fault, excepting what is connected with householders. If the confession of these offenses of ours in the midst of the Saṅgha by the covering over with grass — excepting a grave fault, excepting what is connected with householders — is agreeable to any venerable one, let him remain silent; to whomever it is not agreeable, let him speak.
"These offenses of ours have been confessed in the midst of the Saṅgha by the covering over with grass — excepting a grave fault, excepting what is connected with householders. It is agreeable to the Saṅgha; therefore it is silent. Thus do I hold it."
