[76] Then the Saṅgha carried out the act of demotion (niyassakamma) against the bhikkhu Seyyasaka, saying: "You must dwell in dependence (nissaya)." He, having had the act of demotion carried out against him by the Saṅgha, associating with, frequenting, and attending upon good friends (kalyāṇamitta), having recitation given to him and asking questions, became learned, one to whom the collections had come down, an expert in the Dhamma, an expert in the Vinaya, an expert in the mātikās, wise, competent, intelligent, conscientious, scrupulous, desirous of the training. He conducted himself properly, he became deferential, he behaved in a manner deserving release; and approaching the bhikkhus he spoke thus: "Friends, I, having had the act of demotion carried out against me by the Saṅgha, am conducting myself properly, I am deferential, I am behaving in a manner deserving release. How now should I proceed?" The bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
