[172] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus carried a carrying-pole loaded at both ends. People looked down upon, criticized, and spread it about, saying, "... just like the king's porters (muṇḍavaṭṭī)!" ... They reported this matter to the Blessed One. ... "Bhikkhus, a carrying-pole loaded at both ends is not to be carried. Whoever should carry one commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Bhikkhus, I allow a carrying-pole loaded at one end, a pole carried between two, a head-load, a shoulder-load, a hip-load, and a load hung [from the hand]."
