[189] Now at that time bhikkhus urinated here and there in the monastery. The monastery became soiled. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, I allow urine to be passed in one designated spot." The monastery became foul-smelling. … "Bhikkhus, I allow a urine-pot (passāvakumbhī)." Sitting, they urinated with difficulty. … "Bhikkhus, I allow a urinal footrest (passāvapādukā)." The urinal footrests were exposed to view; bhikkhus were ashamed to urinate. … "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be enclosed with three kinds of walls: a brick wall, a stone wall, and a wooden wall." The urine-pot, being uncovered, was foul-smelling. … "Bhikkhus, I allow a lid."
