[195] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhus (chabbaggiyā bhikkhū) engaged in misconduct (anācāra) of such a kind as this: they planted flowering plants and had them planted; they watered them and had them watered; they picked flowers and had them picked; they strung them together and had them strung; they made garlands with stalks on one side and had them made; they made garlands with stalks on both sides and had them made; they made flower-sprays (mañjarikā) and had them made; they made wreaths (vidhutikā) and had them made; they made chaplets (vaṭaṃsaka) and had them made; they made crest-garlands (āveḷa) and had them made; they made breast-coverings of flowers (uracchada) and had them made. For women of good families, for daughters of good families, for girls of good families, for daughters-in-law of good families, and for female slaves of good families they carried, and had carried, garlands with stalks on one side; they carried, and had carried, garlands with stalks on both sides; they carried, and had carried, flower-sprays; they carried, and had carried, wreaths; they carried, and had carried, chaplets; they carried, and had carried, crest-garlands; they carried, and had carried, breast-coverings of flowers.
Together with women of good families, daughters of good families, girls of good families, daughters-in-law of good families, and female slaves of good families they ate from one vessel, drank from one cup, sat on one seat, lay down on one bed, lay down on one mat, lay down under one coverlet, and lay down on one mat under one coverlet. They ate at the wrong time; they drank intoxicants; they wore garlands, scents, and unguents; they danced, sang, played music, and performed; they danced while a woman danced, sang while a woman danced, played music while a woman danced, performed while a woman danced; … they danced while a woman performed, sang while a woman performed, played music while a woman performed, performed while a woman performed.
They played on eight-row boards; they played on ten-row boards; they played at imaginary boards in the air; they played at stepping-diagrams (parihārapatha); they played at spillikans (santikā); they played at dice-boards (khalikā); they played at tip-cat (ghaṭikā); they played at hand-pictures (salākahattha); they played at dice (akkha); they played at leaf-pipes (paṅkacira); they played with toy ploughs (vaṅkaka); they played at turning somersaults (mokkhacikā); they played with pinwheels (ciṅgulaka); they played with toy leaf-measures (pattāḷhaka); they played with toy chariots; they played with toy bows; they played at guessing letters (akkharikā); they played at guessing thoughts (manesikā); they played at mimicking deformities (yathāvajja).
They trained in elephant-craft; they trained in horsemanship; they trained in chariotry; they trained in archery; they trained in swordsmanship. They ran before an elephant; they ran before a horse; they ran before a chariot. They ran back and forth; they whistled; they clapped their hands; they wrestled; they fought with fists. Spreading out the outer robe (saṅghāṭi) in the middle of a dance-arena, they said to a dancing girl, "Dance here, sister!" They made the forehead gesture of approval (nalāṭikā); and they engaged in misconduct of various kinds.
They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, one should not engage in misconduct of various kinds. Whoever should engage in it is to be dealt with according to the rule."
