[194] There was no gateway (koṭṭhaka) … "Bhikkhus, I allow a gateway." The gateway had a low base … "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be made with a high base." The built-up facing collapsed … "Bhikkhus, I allow three kinds of facing to be built up: a facing of brick, a facing of stone, and a facing of wood." Climbing up, they were troubled … "Bhikkhus, I allow three kinds of stairs: brick stairs, stone stairs, and wooden stairs." Climbing up, they fell off … "Bhikkhus, I allow a railing to hold on to." The gateway had no door … "Bhikkhus, I allow a door, a door-frame with lintel, a lower pivot-socket, an upper pivot-socket, a bolt-post, a 'monkey's head' pin, a stick-pin, a latch, a keyhole, a hole for the pulling-cord, and a pulling-cord." Grass-rubble fell down in the gateway … "Bhikkhus, I allow one, having lashed down [the covering], to give it a smearing inside and out—whitewash, black colouring, treatment with red ochre, garland-work, creeper-work, makara-tooth work, and the fivefold-strip design." The surrounding yard was muddy … "Bhikkhus, I allow gravel to be strewn." It did not suffice [to cover it] … "Bhikkhus, I allow flagstones to be laid down." Water collected … "Bhikkhus, I allow a drain for the water." There was no water-pot for rinsing (ācamanakumbhī) … "Bhikkhus, I allow a water-pot for rinsing." There was no rinsing-dipper … "Bhikkhus, I allow a rinsing-dipper." Sitting, they rinsed themselves with discomfort … "Bhikkhus, I allow a foot-stand for rinsing." The foot-stand for rinsing was exposed to view; bhikkhus were ashamed to rinse … "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be enclosed with three kinds of fence: a brick fence, a stone fence, and a wooden fence." The water-pot for rinsing was uncovered; it got strewn over with grass-rubble and with dust … "Bhikkhus, I allow a lid."
