[239] Now at that time bhikkhus made fireplaces here and there in the precinct. The precinct became littered. They informed the Blessed One of this matter. "Bhikkhus, I allow a fire hall (aggisālā) to be made at one side." The fire hall had a low foundation; it was flooded with water. … "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be made with a high foundation." The filling collapsed. … "Bhikkhus, I allow the building of three kinds of facing: a brick facing, a stone facing, and a wooden facing." Those climbing up were in difficulty. … "Bhikkhus, I allow three kinds of stairs: brick stairs, stone stairs, and wooden stairs." Those climbing up fell off. … "Bhikkhus, I allow a railing to hold on to."
