[227] Now at that time the dwellings (vihāra) had low foundations; they were flooded by water. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, I allow you to make the foundation high." The built-up foundation collapsed. … "Bhikkhus, I allow you to build up facings of three kinds: a brick facing, a stone facing, and a wooden facing." Those climbing up were in difficulty. … "Bhikkhus, I allow stairs of three kinds: brick stairs, stone stairs, and wooden stairs." Those climbing up fell off. … "Bhikkhus, I allow a railing for holding on to."
