[217] Now at that time thread had accrued to the Saṅgha. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow thread for lacing a bed." The frame-pieces used up much thread. … "Bhikkhus, I allow you, having pierced the frame-pieces, to lace it in a checkerboard pattern (aṭṭhapadaka)." A small piece of cloth had accrued. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a ground-cloth (cimilikā) to be made." Cotton down had accrued. … "Bhikkhus, I allow you, having teased it apart, to make a pillow. There are three kinds of cotton down: cotton from trees, cotton from creepers, and cotton from the poṭakī grass."
