[265] Now at that time people, dedicating them to the Saṅgha, were preparing pavilions, preparing coverings, and preparing open spaces. The bhikkhus who were pupils (antevāsika) of the group-of-six bhikkhus, thinking, "What the Blessed One has allowed according to seniority applies only to what belongs to the Saṅgha, not to what has been made by special dedication," went on ahead, again and again, of the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha and appropriated the pavilions, appropriated the coverings, appropriated the open spaces, saying, "This will be for our preceptors, this will be for our teachers, this will be for ourselves."
Then the venerable Sāriputta, going along behind the Saṅgha of bhikkhus headed by the Buddha — the pavilions having been appropriated, the coverings having been appropriated, the open spaces having been appropriated — and not obtaining a place, sat down at the root of a certain tree.
Then the Blessed One, having risen at the time of dawn in the night, cleared his throat. The venerable Sāriputta also cleared his throat.
"Who is there?"
"It is I, Blessed One — Sāriputta."
"Why are you sitting here, Sāriputta?"
Then the venerable Sāriputta informed the Blessed One of that matter.
