[276] Now at that time the bhikkhus of the group of seventeen were repairing a certain large dwelling (vihāra) on the outskirts, thinking, "Here we shall spend the rains residence (vassa)." The bhikkhus of the group of six saw the group-of-seventeen bhikkhus repairing the dwelling; having seen them, they said: "Friends, these group-of-seventeen bhikkhus are repairing a dwelling. Come, let us evict them." Some said: "Wait, friends, while they are repairing it; when it has been repaired, we shall evict them." Then the group-of-six bhikkhus said to the group-of-seventeen bhikkhus: "Get out, friends; the dwelling falls to us."
"Friends, should this not have been announced beforehand? We would have repaired another."
"Friends, does the dwelling not belong to the Saṅgha?"
"Yes, friends, the dwelling belongs to the Saṅgha."
"Get out, friends; the dwelling falls to us."
"Friends, the dwelling is large; you may stay, and we too shall stay."
"Get out, friends; the dwelling falls to us"—and, angry and displeased, seizing them by the neck, they threw them out. Those bhikkhus, being thrown out by them, wept. The bhikkhus said: "Friends, why do you weep?" "Friends, these group-of-six bhikkhus, angry and displeased, are throwing us out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha."
Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … were annoyed, complained, and spread it about: "How can the group-of-six bhikkhus, angry and displeased, throw bhikkhus out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Is it true, as they say, bhikkhus, that the group-of-six bhikkhus, angry and displeased, are throwing bhikkhus out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha?" "It is true, Blessed One." … Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, bhikkhus are not to be thrown out of a dwelling belonging to the Saṅgha by one who is angry and displeased. Whoever should throw them out is to be dealt with according to the rule. Bhikkhus, I allow lodgings (senāsana) to be assigned."
