[417] Bhikkhus, when a resident bhikkhu (āvāsika) sees an incoming bhikkhu (āgantuka) who is more senior, he should prepare a seat; he should set out water for the feet, a foot-stool, and a foot-wiper; having gone out to meet him, he should receive his bowl and robe; he should ask him whether he wants drinking water; he should ask him whether he wants water for washing. If he is able, he should wipe the sandals; when wiping the sandals, he should wipe them first with a dry cloth and afterwards with a wet one; having washed the sandal-wiping cloth and wrung it out, he should set it aside to one side. He should pay homage to the incoming bhikkhu who is senior; he should prepare a lodging (senāsana), saying, "This lodging falls to you"; he should tell him whether it has been occupied or is unoccupied; he should point out the alms-resort (gocara); he should point out what is not a resort (agocara); he should point out the families designated as trainees (sekkhasammatāni kulāni); he should point out the place for defecation; he should point out the place for urination; he should point out the drinking water; he should point out the water for washing; he should point out the walking staff; he should point out the established agreements of the Saṅgha (kaṭikasaṇṭhāna): "One should enter at this time; one should depart at this time."
If he (the incoming bhikkhu) is newly ordained, he should instruct him while remaining seated: "Put your bowl here; put your robe here; sit on this seat." He should point out the drinking water; he should point out the water for washing; he should point out the cloth for wiping sandals. He should have the newly ordained incoming bhikkhu pay homage; he should point out a lodging: "This lodging falls to you"; he should tell him whether it has been occupied or is unoccupied; he should point out the alms-resort; he should point out what is not a resort; he should point out the families designated as trainees; he should point out the place for defecation; he should point out the place for urination; he should point out the drinking water; he should point out the water for washing; he should point out the walking staff; he should point out the established agreements of the Saṅgha: "One should enter at this time; one should depart at this time."
This, bhikkhus, is the duty (vatta) of resident bhikkhus, according to which resident bhikkhus should conduct themselves properly.
