[418] Now at that time, bhikkhus who were about to depart set out without putting away the wooden goods and earthenware goods, leaving doors and windows open, and without taking leave regarding the lodging (senāsana). The wooden goods and earthenware goods were ruined, and the lodging was left unguarded. Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … criticized, deplored, and complained: "How can bhikkhus who are about to depart set out without putting away the wooden goods and earthenware goods, leaving doors and windows open, and without taking leave regarding the lodging? The wooden goods and earthenware goods are ruined, and the lodging is left unguarded." Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Is it true, bhikkhus, …" … "It is true, Blessed One." … Having rebuked them and given a talk on the Dhamma, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Well then, bhikkhus, I shall lay down the duties (vatta) for departing bhikkhus, in such a way that departing bhikkhus should conduct themselves properly."
