[419] Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu who is about to depart should put away the wooden goods and the earthenware goods, close the doors and windows, and hand over the lodging (senāsana) [by informing another]. If there is no bhikkhu, a novice (sāmaṇera) should be informed; if there is no novice, a monastery attendant (ārāmika) should be informed; if there is no monastery attendant, a lay follower (upāsaka) should be informed. If there is neither a bhikkhu, nor a novice, nor a monastery attendant, nor a lay follower, then, having set a bed upon four stones, having stacked bed upon bed and stool upon stool, having made the lodging-furnishings into a heap on top, having put away the wooden goods and the earthenware goods, and having closed the doors and windows, he should depart.
If the dwelling (vihāra) leaks when it rains, then, if he is able, it should be roofed, or effort should be made, thinking, "How indeed might the dwelling be roofed?" If he should obtain this, it is well; if he should not obtain it, then in a spot where the rain does not leak in, having set a bed there upon four stones, having stacked bed upon bed and stool upon stool, having made the lodging-furnishings into a heap on top, having put away the wooden goods and the earthenware goods, and having closed the doors and windows, he should depart. If the whole dwelling leaks, then, if he is able, the lodging-furnishings should be conveyed into the village, or effort should be made, thinking, "How indeed might the lodging-furnishings be conveyed into the village?" If he should obtain this, it is well; if he should not obtain it, then in the open air, having set a bed upon four stones, having stacked bed upon bed and stool upon stool, having made the lodging-furnishings into a heap on top, having put away the wooden goods and the earthenware goods, and having covered them over with grass or with leaves, he should depart, thinking, "Perhaps at least the parts may remain."
This, bhikkhus, is the duty (vatta) of departing bhikkhus, according to which departing bhikkhus should conduct themselves properly.
