[420] Now at that time bhikkhus did not give the expression of appreciation (anumodanā) in the refectory. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, not give the expression of appreciation in the refectory?" Bhikkhus heard those people complaining, criticizing, and spreading it about. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, on that occasion, in that connection, having given a talk on the Dhamma, addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, I allow the expression of appreciation to be given in the refectory."
