[506] "Venerable sir, in how many ways should remorse (vippaṭisāra) be instilled in a bhikkhu who accuses unrighteously (adhammacodaka)?"
"Upāli, remorse should be instilled in a bhikkhu who accuses unrighteously in five ways: 'The venerable one made the accusation at the wrong time, not at the right time — you have reason for remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with what is untrue, not with what is true — you have reason for remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with harsh speech, not with gentle speech — you have reason for remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with what is unconnected with benefit, not with what is connected with benefit — you have reason for remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with inner hatred, not with a mind of loving-kindness — you have reason for remorse.' Upāli, remorse should be instilled in a bhikkhu who accuses unrighteously in these five ways. For what reason? So that no other bhikkhu might suppose that an accusation may be made with what is untrue."
