[508] "Venerable sir, in how many ways should non-remorse be established for a bhikkhu who makes an accusation in accordance with the Dhamma?"
"Upāli, non-remorse should be established for a bhikkhu who makes an accusation in accordance with the Dhamma in five ways: 'The venerable one made the accusation at a proper time, not at an improper time — that is sufficient for your freedom from remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with what is true, not with what is untrue — that is sufficient for your freedom from remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with gentle speech, not with harsh speech — that is sufficient for your freedom from remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with what is connected with benefit, not with what is unconnected with benefit — that is sufficient for your freedom from remorse. The venerable one made the accusation with a mind of loving-kindness (mettā), not with hatred within — that is sufficient for your freedom from remorse.' Upāli, non-remorse should be established for a bhikkhu who makes an accusation in accordance with the Dhamma in these five ways. For what reason? So that another bhikkhu too may consider that an accusation should be made with what is true."
