[509] "But, venerable sir, in how many ways should remorse (vippaṭisāra) be aroused in a bhikkhu who has been charged (cudita) in accordance with the Dhamma?"
"Upāli, remorse should be aroused in a bhikkhu who has been charged in accordance with the Dhamma in five ways: 'The venerable one was charged at a proper time, not at an improper time — that is reason enough for you to feel remorse. The venerable one was charged with what is factual, not with what is not factual — that is reason enough for you to feel remorse. The venerable one was charged gently, not harshly — that is reason enough for you to feel remorse. The venerable one was charged with what is connected with benefit, not with what is unconnected with benefit — that is reason enough for you to feel remorse. The venerable one was charged with a mind of loving-kindness, not with inner hatred — that is reason enough for you to feel remorse.' Upāli, remorse should be aroused in a bhikkhu who has been charged in accordance with the Dhamma in these five ways."
