[523] Then Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, she stood to one side. Standing to one side, Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī said this to the Blessed One: "It would be good, venerable sir, if the Blessed One would teach the Dhamma in brief, so that, having heard the Dhamma from the Blessed One, I might dwell alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent (ātāpinī), and resolute."
"Gotamī, whatever dhammas you should know thus: 'These dhammas lead to passion, not to dispassion (virāga); they lead to bondage, not to release from bondage; they lead to accumulation, not to diminution; they lead to great desires, not to fewness of desires; they lead to discontent, not to contentment; they lead to socializing, not to seclusion; they lead to laziness, not to the arousing of energy (vīriya); they lead to being difficult to support, not to being easy to support' — of these, Gotamī, you should definitely bear in mind: 'This is not the Dhamma, this is not the Vinaya, this is not the Teacher's instruction.'
"But, Gotamī, whatever dhammas you should know thus: 'These dhammas lead to dispassion, not to passion; they lead to release from bondage, not to bondage; they lead to diminution, not to accumulation; they lead to fewness of desires, not to great desires; they lead to contentment, not to discontent; they lead to seclusion, not to socializing; they lead to the arousing of energy, not to laziness; they lead to being easy to support, not to being difficult to support' — of these, Gotamī, you should definitely bear in mind: 'This is the Dhamma, this is the Vinaya, this is the Teacher's instruction.'"
