[525] Now at that time, bhikkhus, having gone to the bhikkhunīs' (bhikkhunī) quarters, recited the Pātimokkha (pātimokkha) to the bhikkhunīs. People looked down upon them, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "These women are the wives of these men; these women are the mistresses of these men; now these men will take their pleasure together with these women." The bhikkhus heard those people looking down upon them, criticizing, and spreading it about. Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, the Pātimokkha should not be recited by bhikkhus to bhikkhunīs; whoever should recite it commits an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). I allow, bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs to recite the Pātimokkha to bhikkhunīs." The bhikkhunīs did not know: "Thus should the Pātimokkha be recited." … Those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "I allow, bhikkhus, bhikkhus to instruct the bhikkhunīs: 'Thus should you recite the Pātimokkha.'"
