[53] Now at that time a certain bhikkhu was one who used only refuse-rag articles (paṃsukūla) of every kind. He used a bowl made from a human skull. A certain woman, seeing him, was frightened and let out a cry of alarm: "Oh, horror! Surely this is a demon (pisāca)!" People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "How can the ascetics, sons of the Sakyan, use a bowl made from a human skull, like demon-followers?" They reported this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, a bowl made from a human skull is not to be used; whoever should use one commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). And, bhikkhus, one is not to be a user of refuse-rag articles of every kind; whoever should be so commits an offense of wrong-doing."
