[532] Now at that time a bhikkhunī who was a pupil (antevāsinī) of the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā had been following the Blessed One for seven years, mastering the Vinaya. Being of muddled mindfulness (muṭṭhassatī), whatever she had learned, again and again, she kept forgetting. That bhikkhunī heard: "The Blessed One, it is said, wishes to go to Sāvatthī." Then it occurred to that bhikkhunī: "For seven years I have followed the Blessed One, mastering the Vinaya; yet being of muddled mindfulness, whatever I have learned, again and again, I keep forgetting. It is difficult for a woman (mātugāma) to follow the Teacher for as long as life lasts. How, then, should I proceed?" Then that bhikkhunī told this matter to the bhikkhunīs. The bhikkhunīs told this matter to the bhikkhus. Those bhikkhus told this matter to the Blessed One. … "Bhikkhus, I allow bhikkhus to teach the Vinaya to bhikkhunīs."
