[553] Now at that time bhikkhunīs wore long waistbands (kāyabandhana), and with those very bands they cinched in their flanks. People looked down upon, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "… just like householder women who enjoy sensual pleasures." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, a long waistband is not to be worn by a bhikkhunī; whoever should wear one incurs an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). I allow, bhikkhus, a bhikkhunī a waistband made to go round once; but the flanks are not to be cinched in with it; whoever should cinch them in incurs an offense of wrong-doing."
