[556] Now at that time the group-of-six bhikkhunīs anointed their faces, massaged their faces, powdered their faces, marked their faces with realgar (manosilā), painted their bodies, painted their faces, painted both their bodies and their faces. People complained, criticized, and spread it about, saying: "… just like women householders who enjoy sensual pleasures." They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, a bhikkhunī should not anoint her face, should not massage her face, should not powder her face, should not mark her face with realgar, should not paint her body, should not paint her face, should not paint both body and face. Whoever should do so commits an offence (āpatti) of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
