[571] Now at that time, menstruating bhikkhunīs sat down and also lay down upon an upholstered bed and an upholstered bench. The lodging (senāsana) was soiled with blood. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, a bhikkhunī should not sit down nor lie down upon an upholstered bed or an upholstered bench. Whoever should sit down or lie down [upon one] commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa). Bhikkhus, I allow a residence cloth (āvasathacīvara)."
The residence cloth was soiled with blood. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a small cloth secured with a pin (āṇicoḷaka)."
The cloth slipped off. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow, having fastened it with a thread, to tie it at the thigh."
The thread broke. They reported this matter to the Blessed One. "Bhikkhus, I allow a wrap-around cloth (saṃvelliya) and a hip-string (kaṭisuttaka)."
