[583] Now at that time the bhikkhunīs, [thinking,] "It has been allowed by the Blessed One that for eight bhikkhunīs [places be taken] according to seniority (yathāvuḍḍhaṃ), and for the rest according to order of arrival (yathāgatikaṃ)," everywhere only eight bhikkhunīs reserved [places] according to seniority, and the rest [took places] according to order of arrival. They informed the Blessed One of this matter. [He said:] "Bhikkhus, I allow that in the refectory (bhattagga) [places be taken] by eight bhikkhunīs according to seniority, and by the rest according to order of arrival; elsewhere [places] should not be reserved according to seniority. Whoever should so reserve them commits an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
