[59] Now at that time bhikkhus, having driven in stakes here and there and tied [the cloth] to them, sewed their robes; the robe became misshapen at the corners. They informed the Blessed One of this matter. … [He said:] "Bhikkhus, I allow a sewing-frame (kaṭhina) and frame-cords (kaṭhinarajju); having bound [the cloth] down here and there, one may sew the robe."
They spread the frame on uneven ground; the frame broke apart. … "Bhikkhus, the frame is not to be spread on uneven ground; whoever should spread it: an offence of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa)."
They spread the frame on the bare ground; the frame became soiled with dust. … "Bhikkhus, I allow a grass mat (tiṇasanthāraka)."
