[617] Then the Venerable Ānanda, thinking, "Tomorrow is the assembly. It is not fitting for me that I, still being a trainee (sekkha), should go to the assembly," spent much of the night in mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatā sati), and in the last watch of the night, at the time of dawn, thinking, "I shall lie down," he inclined his body. His head had not yet reached the pillow, and his feet were off the ground — in that interval his mind (citta) was liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging. Then the Venerable Ānanda, being an arahant, went to the assembly.
