[618] Then the Venerable Mahākassapa informed the Saṅgha: "Friends, let the Saṅgha listen to me. If the Saṅgha is ready, I shall question Upāli on the Vinaya."
The Venerable Upāli informed the Saṅgha: "Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha listen to me. If the Saṅgha is ready, I, questioned on the Vinaya by the Venerable Mahākassapa, shall answer."
Then the Venerable Mahākassapa said this to the Venerable Upāli: "Friend Upāli, where was the first pārājika laid down?"
"At Vesālī, venerable sir."
"Concerning whom?"
"Concerning Sudinna Kalandaputta."
"On what subject?"
"On sexual intercourse (methunadhamma)."
Then the Venerable Mahākassapa questioned the Venerable Upāli on the subject (vatthu) of the first pārājika, on the origin story (nidāna), on the person (puggala), on the rule as laid down (paññatti), on the subsequent amendment (anupaññatti), on the offense (āpatti), and on the non-offense (anāpatti). "And the second pārājika, friend Upāli — where was it laid down?"
"At Rājagaha, venerable sir."
"Concerning whom?"
"Concerning Dhaniya Kumbhakāraputta."
"On what subject?"
"On taking what is not given (adinnādāna)."
Then the Venerable Mahākassapa questioned the Venerable Upāli on the subject of the second pārājika, on the origin story, on the person, on the rule as laid down, on the subsequent amendment, on the offense, and on the non-offense. "And the third pārājika, friend Upāli — where was it laid down?"
"At Vesālī, venerable sir."
"Concerning whom?"
"Concerning several bhikkhus."
"On what subject?"
"On a human being (manussaviggaha)."
Then the Venerable Mahākassapa questioned the Venerable Upāli on the subject of the third pārājika, on the origin story, on the person, on the rule as laid down, on the subsequent amendment, on the offense, and on the non-offense. "And the fourth pārājika, friend Upāli — where was it laid down?"
"At Vesālī, venerable sir."
"Concerning whom?"
"Concerning the bhikkhus of the bank of the Vaggumudā River."
"On what subject?"
"On superhuman states (uttarimanussadhamma)."
Then the Venerable Mahākassapa questioned the Venerable Upāli on the subject of the fourth pārājika, on the origin story, on the person, on the rule as laid down, on the subsequent amendment, on the offense, and on the non-offense. By this same method he questioned him on the Vinaya of both (ubhatovinaya). Each time he was questioned, the Venerable Upāli answered.
