[619] Then the venerable Mahākassapa informed the Saṅgha: "Friends, let the Saṅgha hear me. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, I would question Ānanda about the Dhamma."
The venerable Ānanda informed the Saṅgha: "Venerable sirs, let the Saṅgha hear me. If it is the right time for the Saṅgha, then I, being questioned about the Dhamma by the venerable Mahākassapa, would answer."
Then the venerable Mahākassapa said this to the venerable Ānanda: "Friend Ānanda, where was the Brahmajāla spoken?"
"Venerable sir, between Rājagaha and Nāḷandā, in the royal rest-house at Ambalaṭṭhikā."
"Concerning whom?"
"Concerning Suppiya the wanderer and the young brahmin Brahmadatta."
Then the venerable Mahākassapa questioned the venerable Ānanda about the occasion (nidāna) of the Brahmajāla and questioned him about the persons. "And the Sāmaññaphala, friend Ānanda — where was it spoken?"
"At Rājagaha, venerable sir, in Jīvaka's Mango Grove."
"With whom?"
"With Ajātasattu, son of the Videhan lady."
Then the venerable Mahākassapa questioned the venerable Ānanda about the occasion of the Sāmaññaphala and questioned him about the person. By this same method he questioned him on the five Nikāyas. Each time he was questioned, the venerable Ānanda answered.
