[629] (Summary verses — uddāna)
When the Fully Awakened One had attained final Nibbāna,
the elder named Kassapa, guardian of the true Dhamma,
addressed the company of bhikkhus
concerning what had been declared by Subhadda on the highway from Pāvā:
"Let us recite the true Dhamma together, before non-Dhamma shines forth."
He selected five hundred less one, and Ānanda as well,
for the communal recitation of the Dhamma and Vinaya, dwelling in the supreme cave.
He questioned Upāli on the Vinaya, and the wise Ānanda on the Suttantas;
the disciples of the Conqueror performed the recitation of the three Piṭakas.
The various lesser and minor rules; conduct in accordance with what has been laid down;
he did not ask; and having stepped upon; he had (women) pay homage; and he did not entreat;
the going forth of womenfolk — "out of faith (in the venerable ones), these are offenses of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa) for me."
Purāṇa, and the brahma-penalty (brahmadaṇḍa); the harem-women together with Udena;
"so many," and "worn-out" (cloth); upper coverings, mattress-covers,
floor coverings, wiping-cloths; dust-cloths, kneading with mud;
a thousand robes accrued to the one named Ānanda for the first time.
Rebuked by the brahma-penalty, he attained the four truths.
Five hundred who had attained mastery — therefore it is called "the (Council of the) Five Hundred."
