[73] Now at that time two bhikkhus were traveling along a highway in the Kosalan country. One bhikkhu behaved improperly. The second bhikkhu said to that bhikkhu: "Friend, do not act in such a way; this is not proper." He bore a grudge against him on that account. Then that bhikkhu, oppressed by thirst, said to the bhikkhu who bore the grudge: "Friend, give me the water-strainer (parissāvana); I shall drink water." The grudge-bearing bhikkhu did not give it. That bhikkhu, oppressed by thirst, died. Then that bhikkhu, having gone to the monastery, reported this matter to the bhikkhus. "But did you, friend, when asked for the water-strainer, not give it?" "That is so, friends." Those bhikkhus who were of few wishes … complained, criticized, and spread it about: "How indeed can a bhikkhu, when asked for a water-strainer, not give it?" Then those bhikkhus reported this matter to the Blessed One.
