[85] Now at that time bhikkhus made the fireplace in the middle of a small bathhouse (jantāghara). There was no surrounding space. … "Bhikkhus, I allow the fireplace to be made at one side in a small bathhouse, and in the middle in a large one." In the bathhouse the fire scorched the face. … "Bhikkhus, I allow clay for the face (mukhamattikā)." They moistened the clay with the hand. … "Bhikkhus, I allow a clay trough (mattikādoṇikā)." The clay was foul-smelling. … "Bhikkhus, I allow it to be scented."
