[1114]* How does one, thinking "I am more senior," despise a more junior bhikkhu? Here a certain bhikkhu is an elder (thera), of long standing (rattaññū), long gone forth. Despising him, [thinking:] "This one is a junior, unrenowned, of little learning,¹ not knowing the unmade (appakataññū); this one's word will count for nothing" — he declares non-Dhamma to be Dhamma, declares Dhamma to be non-Dhamma … declares a grave offense to be a non-grave offense, declares a non-grave offense to be a grave offense. Thus, thinking "I am more senior," he despises a more junior bhikkhu.
¹ [Edition's variant note:] In the Burmese (M.) and European (Yu.) editions this reading [appassuto, "of little learning"] does not appear.
