[1161] At that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's park. Then the Venerable Upāli approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Seated to one side, the Venerable Upāli said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, possessed of how many qualities may a bhikkhu not live without dependence (nissaya) for as long as he lives?"
"Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities may not live without dependence for as long as he lives. Which five? He does not know the Uposatha (uposatha); he does not know the Uposatha procedure; he does not know the Pātimokkha; he does not know the recitation of the Pātimokkha; and he is of less than five rains (vassa). Possessed of these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu may not live without dependence for as long as he lives.
"Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five qualities may live without dependence for as long as he lives. Which five? He knows the Uposatha; he knows the Uposatha procedure; he knows the Pātimokkha; he knows the recitation of the Pātimokkha; and he is of five rains or more than five rains. Possessed of these five qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu may live without dependence for as long as he lives.
"Possessed of five further qualities, Upāli, a bhikkhu may not live without dependence for as long as he lives. Which five?
