[1162] "Venerable sir, possessed of how many factors should a bhikkhu not confer the full ordination (upasampadā), not give dependence (nissaya), and not have a novice (sāmaṇera) attend upon him?"
"Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors should not confer the full ordination, should not give dependence, and should not have a novice attend upon him. Which five? He is not competent to nurse, or to have another nurse, a pupil (antevāsika) or a co-resident (saddhivihārika) who is sick; to allay, or to have another allay, dissatisfaction (anabhirati); to dispel, or to have another dispel, in accordance with the Dhamma, remorse (kukkucca) that has arisen; to guide him in the higher Dhamma (abhidhamma); to guide him in the higher discipline (abhivinaya). Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not confer the full ordination, should not give dependence, and should not have a novice attend upon him.
"Upāli, a bhikkhu possessed of five factors may confer the full ordination, may give dependence, and may have a novice attend upon him. Which five? Possessed of these five factors, Upāli, a bhikkhu should not confer the full ordination, should not give dependence, and should not have a novice attend upon him.
