[1172] "Venerable sir, how many illegitimate disclosures of view (diṭṭhāvikamma) are there?"
"Upāli, there are these five illegitimate disclosures of view. What five? One discloses one's view concerning a non-offence (anāpatti); one discloses one's view concerning an offence (āpatti) not amenable to confession (adesanāgāminī); one discloses one's view concerning an offence already confessed; one discloses one's view together with four or five; one discloses one's view merely in the mind. These, Upāli, are the five illegitimate disclosures of view.
Upāli, there are these five legitimate disclosures of view. What five? One discloses one's view concerning an offence; one discloses one's view concerning an offence amenable to confession (desanāgāminī); one discloses one's view concerning an offence not yet confessed; one does not disclose one's view together with four or five; one does not disclose one's view merely in the mind. These, Upāli, are the five legitimate disclosures of view.
There are, Upāli, five further illegitimate disclosures of view. What five? One discloses one's view in the presence of one belonging to a different communion (nānāsaṃvāsaka); one discloses one's view in the presence of one standing within a different boundary (nānāsīmā); one discloses one's view in the presence of one not of regular standing (apakatatta); one discloses one's view together with four or five; one discloses one's view merely in the mind. These, Upāli, are the five illegitimate disclosures of view.
