[1176] "Venerable sir, how many are the actings upon acknowledgment (paṭiññātakaraṇa) that are not in accordance with the Dhamma?"
"There are, Upāli, these five actings upon acknowledgment that are not in accordance with the Dhamma. Which five?
A bhikkhu has committed an offense entailing defeat (pārājika); being charged with an offense entailing defeat, he acknowledges having committed an offense entailing a formal meeting of the Saṅgha (saṅghādisesa), and the Saṅgha deals with him for an offense entailing a formal meeting of the Saṅgha: this is an acting upon acknowledgment not in accordance with the Dhamma.
A bhikkhu has committed an offense entailing defeat; being charged with an offense entailing defeat, he acknowledges having committed an offense entailing expiation (pācittiya) … an offense entailing acknowledgment (pāṭidesanīya) … an offense of wrong-doing (dukkaṭa), and the Saṅgha deals with him for an offense of wrong-doing: this is an acting upon acknowledgment not in accordance with the Dhamma.
